EPIC (2013)
This movie was my first chance at a ‘fantasy film’ and I was lucky enough to help shape all of the action set pieces. The most successful seq I had was when they broke into the house (which made 8 minutes of final film), but sequences like this one were fun to build too. This particular one was later changed to save screen time. I was asked to weave in and out of existing panels by the end of the seq.

This seq: Our heroes have infiltrated the villain’s fortress – a rotted stump – and stolen the magic podling, and are trying to escape. Ronin has created a diversion to distract Mandrake. Doesn’t go as planned.

EPIC (2013)
This seq: Our heroes are ABOUT to infiltrate the rotten stump full of bad guys. The purpose of this version was to try to establish some daily, disgusting aspects of Boggan life as seen through our heroes’ eyes while they try to grab the stolen podling. These are all just first-pass thinking doodles, making crap up as I went.

RIO (2011)
It was fun to try to shape new characters, and hopefully create a franchise to build on. I used a few sketches from other board artists to help guide Tulio’s now-defining quirk – his delusion that he can talk to birds.

This seq: Tulio shows up for the first time in the movie, meeting Linda & Blu. He tries to convince Linda to travel to Brazil and help save Blu’s species. Her aunt and her pet cat Clyde add some colour to the scene – their roles cut out before final.

RIO (2011)
This seq: While the smugglers celebrate, Blu & Jewel attempt an escape. Nigel’s backstory was still in development, so in this version we see how he worked his birdseed supply to his advantage.

Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (2009)
This was a ton of fun to work on, and a lot of work. I was freelancing on this at the time, so I was given some sequences ‘guaranteed not to change’. Naturally they did, a lot, and at one point my deadline was every 12 hours so I had time to scan them and send via FTP. (That’s why these are all thumbnails). It was so worth it in the end. This still is one of my favourite gigs.

This seq: The spaghetti twister has descended upon the town of Chew & Swallow, and Flint must race through the town to shut off the FLDSNFR from his homemade science lab. In this version, in a crucial moment Flint realizes too late that the invisible lab coat given to him by his idols at the League of Scientists never really existed at all, much like their respect for him as a real scientist.

rock in peace, Lemmy

Lemmy Kilmister of Mötorhead fame passed away Monday. This was as close as I got in getting him into a gig, where I used him as inspiration for posing this character from a tv show I worked on. I always thought Lemmy would be great animated. I saw Mötorhead live twice in my time, they always put on a great show.
